Transkribus is a comprehensive platform for the automated recognition, transcription and searching of historical documents. It consists of:

The main objective of Transkribus is to support users who are engaged in the transcription of printed or handwritten documents, namely humanities scholars, archives, members of the public and computer scientists.

Transkribus offers a number of tools for the automated processing of documents, such as:

  • Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR)
  • Layout Analysis
  • Document Understanding
  • Writer Identification
  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR) using ABBYY Finereader Engine 11

Transkribus is funded by the European Commission as part of the READ project.

Transkribus is hosted by the Digitisation and Digital Preservation group (DEA) at the University of Innsbruck. It is funded by the European Commission as part of the H2020 Project READ (2016-2019).

Transkribus was previously funded by the FP7 Project tranScriptorium (2013-2015).

Transkribus is still under development and most parts of the software are Open Source. Visit our Github repository for further information.
